Allow myself to introduce.....myself.

I’m Joyce Sowards.  Thank you for stopping by.

I hope you’ve had a chance to browse through the website and listen to a few episodes.  In keeping with the theme, I’ll give you a tiny bit of my origin story.  Unbeknownst to me, my love for media came as a young teenager.  Living in a small town with lots of time to kill, you have to get creative.  Whether with my sisters or close friends, I was always game for creating silly home videos or audio recordings.  May those recordings never get leaked!

I grew up watching and learning from others.  As the youngest of four girls and two hard working parents, I was able to develop the skill of observation.  That experience, as well as many others throughout my life, set a foundation for a desire to connect with others.  More on that in a bit…

Flash forward to my adult years.  I continued to build on visual story telling, but fell completely in love with Podcasting and knew I needed to pursue this medium.  When the opportunity presents itself, I love to listen to the experiences of others and visualize myself in their shoes.  Experience taking allows you to really understand and connect with people, gain understanding and grow to love them.  You can find the good in them, know their true character and realize that deep down we all carry with us superpowers that have ripple effects beyond our reach.  I think it’s time we search out the good and build on it.

I use the word “Superhero” as a metaphor.  There’s a reason movies of this nature continue to break box office records. Think of Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Rocky, etc.  We’re all looking for hope, for good to conquer evil, to see a hero rise up among their challenges.  We like to think that we too can be like them in our own way; to live vicariously through them.  “Next door” to us, (whether it be standing in line, passing through the hall or sitting at a stop light) is a Superhero.   It’s up to us to recognize and learn from them so in the end, we can truly become a better version of our self.  Someday, the best version… a Superhero.

Like most of us, throughout my life I’ve struggled to know what person I want to become and more importantly, how do I get there?  I didn’t feel gifted in one thing or even know how to use my smaller talents to find my purpose in life.  I felt so lost, but I knew there were answers out there somewhere. Along our heroes journey there will be a time where we will reach a threshold, but with the help of a mentor or outside force we can gain our reward.

I found that I gain answers and am guided the most through learning from others.  People with characteristics I didn’t even know I wanted or knew I already had.  This knowledge has brought a light into my life.

Like the quote from the Greek Philosopher, Heraclitus who said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” With every journey we hear or take part in, we are constantly changing like that river. That is where the true magic happens and superpowers are revealed.

I’m thankful you’re here with me on this pursuit of the Art of Becoming.  Besides my love for Podcasting, I’m a wife and mother of four.  Everything I do points back to them in some way and I can’t wait to introduce you to my family in future episodes.  We live in the beautiful southwest desert of Las Cruces, NM., where green chile is a staple in every home and endless blue skies grace our landscape.

Thank you for listening and supporting the show.  You have my sincerest gratitude.

Stay Super everyone,

Joyce
